Hogwarts Legacy: 10 Other Movie Universes That Deserve An Open World Game
JK Rowling is not just a transphobic person, she’s the transphobic person. She is the most well known and most respected openly transphobic person in pop culture, and her views get shared far and wide as a result of this. And while she’s a huge success, Hogwarts Legacy also feels like it might be her last roll of the dice for elite cultural relevance. Harry Potter book sales are declining, Fantastic Beasts has performed nowhere near as well as the Daniel Radcliffe-led original movie series, and while her recent adult novels have been bestsellers, they’ve had minimal staying power and have slid down the charts quickly. If this tanks, it’s a serious b
If Hogwarts Legacy takes place in the early 1800s, there are several Hogwarts students that players could encounter that won't be completely new. Alberic Grunnion, for example, who prominently featured on a Chocolate Frog card mentioned in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone , was born in 1803 and attended Hogwarts from 1814 to 1821. Grunnion was the nineteenth-century wizard that invented the Dungbomb, a magical stink bomb that prominently features in the books and films as one of the 'Weasley & Weasley' shop produ
Game of Thrones is one of the most popular TV shows of all time, with the series remaining one of the most popular TV shows across the 2010s. The series, based on the books by George RR Martin , takes place across two continents (Westeros and Essos), each with a rich and varied geography and hist
Reports have emerged today that the upcoming Harry Potter RPG Hogwarts Legacy will include a trans-inclusive character creator . Usually, when I hear that a video game is going to be trans-inclusive, my first thought is "oh that’s good, I hope they don’t mess it up." With Hogwarts Legacy, it’s a lot more complicated than that. Harry Potter as a franchise - and this game in particular - has a lot of red in the ledger when it comes to trans inclusivity. Not only is there JK Rowling’s history of transphobia to consider, there’s also the fact that the game’s lead designer Troy Leavitt used to run a GamerGate-adjacent, anti-SJW YouTube channel. It would be disingenuous to suggest that Hogwarts Legacy is building off a blank slate when it comes to including trans charact
Cyberpunk 2077 is easily the biggest game to push a transgender character creator to the forefront, and I’ll be returning to that in time, but first I think there’s a big question to be asked: does Hogwarts Legacy’s trans inclusive character creator make any difference? My answer is a rather blunt ‘no
Other Ministers of the era include Dugald McPhail, who came up with the idea of the Knight Bus, an emergency means of transportation for stranded witches and wizards, and Faris Sparvin, the longest-ever serving Minister for Magic. Sparvin survived an assassination attempt and introduced one of the most significant pieces of legislation of the wizarding world: the Decree for the Reasonable Restriction of Underage Sorcery. Although this wasn't enforced until 1875, which could be considered the late 1800s, it would make sense for this Minister to make an appearance, as there is reason to believe that the events that take place in Hogwarts Legacy are the ones that lead to this legislation being enfor
Shrek is one of the most popular animated franchises of all time, with the series subverting the expectations of the fairy tale genre and introducing elements that appealed to both adults and children al
I’m not sure hogwarts legacy beasts Legacy’s trans character creator makes that big of a difference to the game’s place in the industry, what it represents, or whether it absolves the game of any of JK Rowling’s baked-in guilt. It certainly doesn’t change how I feel about it. Hopefully, though, it can at least be a helpful stepping stone for a triple-A game to one day get trans representation right from start to finish. Until then, yet again the game industry is moving two steps forward, one step b
The late 1800s would be the most interesting years for Hogwarts Legacy story to take place in, as these are the years in which numerous events which affected the modern wizarding world took place. These are also the years in which more known characters would have attended Hogwarts, such as Albus, Ariana and Aberforth Dumbledore , or Thomas and Mary Riddle, Lord Voldemort's grandparents. The Dumbledores at Hogwarts would make for an emotional side narrative due to the events that led to Ariana's death at the age of fourteen, as well as the death of their mother, Kendra. Ariana's troubles controlling her own powers could tie into the main story and theme of Hogwarts Legacy , and have players decide to help - or ignore - Ariana. Taken a step further, there are a number of 'what if's' the story could explore, such as creating a more detailed backstory to Ariana by giving her the ability to wield the ancient magic players already know will take center stage in Hogwarts Legacy 's story, and have this be the reason for the tragedy that befalls the Dumbledore family with her de
